Mission for Maureen

Inspired by the death of his mother to cancer earlier this year, Rikki Ledger and his father Trevor, decided to arrange a bike ride challenge for 40 of their family, friends and colleagues to help raise much needed funds for Action Against Cancer.

The challenge started at the family home in Acklington in Northumberland and finished a gruelling 36 hours and 120 miles later in the centre of Edinburgh at the famous Edinburgh Castle. All of the participants completed the challenge and were treated to a celebration dinner and surprise entertainment by comedian Brendan Healy, who had travelled up from the North East to help take away the pain of their aching muscles with some light entertainment.

In total the team raised an incredible £15,000! Rikki Ledger, said, "The response to the cycle challenge has been amazing. My Mum Maureen would have been so proud of us all. She battled the illness all the way and we all did it for her and to help raise awareness and funds for this terrible disease. To raise this type of money was beyond all expectations and I would like to thank everyone who took part, my employer Benfield, now part of the Lookers family, who provided the support vehicle and everyone associated with the charity Action Against Cancer"

Founder and Chairwoman of Action Against Cancer, Hilary Craft, BEM, said, "Everyone at Action Against Cancer is so grateful to the organisers of the Mission for Maureen, the cyclists who took part and their sponsors. All of the funds raised by this wonderful event in memory of Maureen Ledger will be spent on cutting edge cancer research at Imperial College. Thank you so much."
